Horse Scarf

Author: Juno Volsung /

Well, I have finished the scarf finally and yes I even took a pic before I mailed it. It came out rather well save for a few mistakes I didn't notice until it was too late. Anyway, attached is a picture of it.

It is reversible, or Double Knitted, which ever you prefer to call it. The yarn I used was the Red Heart Super Saver Gold and Red Heart Super Saver Burgundy. I couldn't find Maroon, which was originally requested so got as close to it as I could. It still came out very well I think, especially for a design I created myself.

Miranda, thanks for the pattern it is beautiful. I figured out the double knit part but I am not sure how many stitches you actually CO to get the checkered pattern. Also how many rows is the checked pattern ? I am an new knitter and its not working out for me. Thank you

This is the start and finish of the scarf.. this gets the checkerboard pattern and then you can start with the pattern which is located in the post called Horse Scarf Pattern in my blog

CO 52 stitches (there should be 26 of each color) Make sure the colors alternate so you don’t have two of the same color stitches next to each other. It should start with Color A and end with Color B.

Remember on the first Purl stitch of each row, bring your Purl color around and over the top from back to front. If you don’t then your two sides will not be connected. You can always go back and stitch them together after you are done.

Row 1: *K1, P1 Repeat from * to end. Knit Color B, Purl Color A.
Row 2: *K1, P1 Repeat from * to end. Knit Color A, Purl Color B.
Row 3: Repeat Row 1
Row 4: Repeat Row 2
Row 5: Repeat Row 1

You will notice, now one side is Color A and the other side if Color B.

This is where the checker board pattern starts.

Keep your Knit color in back and Purl color in Front. Basically, Knit with the yarn in back and Purl with the yarn in front. Your knit color will be the color of the first stitch on the needle. Unless otherwise told.

Switching yarns means to put the yarn that is in front in the back and the one that is in back in the front.

Row 6: With Color A in Front and Color B in back P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 six times. Switch yarns, K1, P1 five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times.
Row 7: With Color A in back and Color B in Front P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 six times. Switch yarns K1, P1 five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times.
Row 8: Repeat Row 6
Row 9: Repeat Row 7
Row 10: Repeat Row 6

Row 11: With Color A in front and Color B in back K1, P1 five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 six times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 five times.
Row 12: With Color A in back and Color B in Front K1, P1 Repeat from five times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 six times. Switch yarns P1, K1 five times. Switch yarns K1, P1 five times.
Row 13: Repeat Row 11
Row 14: Repeat Row 12
Row 15: Repeat Row 11
Row 16: Repeat Row 6
Row 17: Repeat Row 7
Row 18: Repeat Row 6
Row 19: Repeat Row 7
Row 20: Repeat Row 6
Row 21: Repeat Row 1
Row 22: Repeat Row 2
Row 23: Repeat Row 1
Row 24: Repeat Row 2
Row 25: Repeat Row 1

Can you please tell me your gauge and how many yards you used ?

Miranda Stanbery said...

There is no set guage and I used about 200 yards of each color.. the yardage all depends on how long you want it.. for 6 repeats of the pattern it is about 200 yards of each
